Android TV boxes are the easiest devices to set up, because most of them can install apps directly. The only variation is whether your app is on the Play Store or supplied as a file.
What you need
- An Android TV box, Nvidia Shield, Google TV or similar
- Your username and password
- Five minutes
Step 1: Decide how the app arrives
There are two routes and your provider will tell you which applies:
- Play Store — search the app name and install. Nothing else to do.
- Direct file — a download address you enter into Downloader, exactly like a Firestick.
Step 2: Allow installs from unknown sources (file route only)
- Open Settings › Device Preferences › Security & restrictions.
- Choose Unknown sources.
- Turn it on for the app doing the installing, usually Downloader.
Step 3: Install and sign in
Install the app, open it, and enter the username and password supplied. The first load pulls down the channel list and can take a minute or two.
Step 4: Change two settings worth changing
- Buffer size — set it to High on a slower connection. You trade a slightly slower channel change for a far smoother picture.
- Hardware decoding — leave on. Turn it off only if a channel shows sound with no picture.
If something goes wrong
App not in the Play Store
Normal for IPTV. Use the direct download address with Downloader instead.
Remote will not reach a button
Some apps are built for phones. Try the D-pad arrows, or a mouse toggle if the box has one.
Stuttering on 4K channels
Use Ethernet rather than Wi-Fi, and check the box is actually set to a 4K output mode.
Questions
Does this work on Nvidia Shield?
Yes, and it is one of the best devices for it — more memory and a proper Ethernet port.
Can I use the same login on my phone too?
Only if the plan allows more than one connection. Otherwise the second device will fail while the first is playing.
Reseller tip: send this guide with the login, not after the customer asks. Most people who never got it working say nothing at all — they simply do not renew.
